Floods. Hurricanes. Tsunamis. 2005 devastated many businesses around the country. A critcal issue on their minds? Accessing their data. 60 percent of small businesses and nearly 70 percent of home-based computers fail to back-up their data regurlarly, according to reseach firm IDC.1 For many this task seems overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be.
There are many levels of backing up data. We'd like to offer you a few suggestions.
Basic Back-Up: Simply making a copy of your data and storing it offsite is an easy, inexpesive way to protect your company. Critical data can be copied to CD or DVD writable drives, flash drives or other devices. *Caveat: This task should be assigned to a very diligent person as it easy to forget to do.
Online Back-up Service: Online services are available to access your data over the Intenet and copy your files, backing them up to secure locations. While it is convienent to have the automated process in place, computers will have to be left on overnight for online service to access the data.
Internal Back-Up: Internally loaded back-up applications copy files from your computer to specific storage devices. These applications tend to be faster and once you purchase the application, there are usually no additional costs. However, data is stored on site and should be removed for a safer disaster recovery plan.
So, what's the best option? Your business should review your needs and choose the solution that works best for your company. Consider combining all of these methods. But keep in mind one critical issue when deciding and back-up plan, it only works if you actually use it.
