Signs Of The Times

Dear Colleagues,

There aren't many sources available for you to combine astrology, education, and the independent print industry into one bold prediction, but by golly, this column is one of them.

You can't imagine how disturbed I was to learn last week that change is not only in the air, but in the stars. An Internet news headline blared "Age of Aquarius Actually Age of Capricorn, Thanks to Rotation of the Earth."

According to astronomers with the Minnesota Planetarium Society, apparently the millennia long effect of the moon's gravitational pull on the Earth has caused about a one-month bump in the alignment of the Zodiac since the ancient Greeks.

The result? While we Aquarians relentlessly pursued the business of understanding life's mysteries, questing the unique and original, and generally marching to the beat of a different drummer, cosmic forces were surreptitiously using ocean tides to turn us into Capricorns "with little adventurous spirit or ambition - happy to remain within a small domain, refusing to budge unless pushed." Granted, Capricorns accomplish many commendable goals because they are plodding, perseverant, goal-oriented workaholics. But, who wants to exchange "The Dawning of the Age of Aquarius" for a nanny goat?

Another intriguing article reported that unemployment statistics correlate inversely with educational attainment. In short, the better your education, the less likely you are to be unemployed. While the unemployment rate was 14.6% for those without a high school diploma and 9.6% for high school graduates, it was 5.2% for college graduates, and fell to 2.3% for those with professional degrees. Statistics for weekly earnings were comparable with median wage scales ranging from $434 to $1,532 depending upon one's educational level.

So, how is this all relevant? Well, so far we've shown that the world, including our industry, is changing whether we like it or not. Our only recourse is to adapt or atrophy. We've also shown that greater knowledge brings greater profits and earnings.
